Obituary
Maj. Olwyn J. Abery of the Salvation Army School for Officers Training in Suffern died Tuesday at her Woodland Drive home in Suffern. She was 48.
She was born Nov. 12, 1938, in Melborune, Australia, to Frank F. and Thelma G. (Scotney) Saunders.
Mrs. Abery served at the training school from 1980-82 and returned in September 1986.
She is survived by her mother, a lieutenant commissioner with the Salvaiton Army in San Francisco; her husband, Salvation Army Maj. Kenneth C. Abery of Suffern; three daughters, Karen S. of Atlanta, Kenwyn J. Trotter of Louisville, and Jennifer J. Abrey of Suffern; and two brothers, Salvation Army Maj. Neil Saunders of El Paso, Texas, and Salvaiton Army Maj. Robert F. Saunders of San Francisco.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Salvation Army School for Officers Training, 201 Lafayette Ave., Suffern. Cremation is to follow at Cedar Lawn Crematory, Paterson, N.J.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Salvation Army, c/o of the School for Officers Training, for the establishment of a cadet scholarship in her name.
Arrangements were made by Wanamaker and Carlough in Suffern.

Olwyn Jeanette Saunders was born November 12, 1938 in Melbourne, Australia to officer parents, then Captain and Mrs. Frank F. Saunders (later Lt. Commissioner & Mrs. F.F. Saunders). She was trained as a nurse in Australia before she went with her parents to Jamaica, West Indies. In Jamaica she worked at Nuttal Hospital and then later at the Royal Bank of Canada. On July 8th, 1961 she married Kenneth C. Abery who was then Sportsmaster at Jamaica College in Kingston, Jamaica.
They entered the New York Training School in 1962 from the Pioneer Corps in Philadelphia. In June 1963 they opened the Germantown Corps as Cadet Lieutenants and after a Pro=tem appointment at Wilmington, Delaware they were appointed to the Finance Department at T.H.Q. in New York. Between February 1966 and July 1969 Mrs. Abery was the Home League Secretary at the Hempstead Corps. They next moved to the Eastern Penn, where Mrs. Abery was the Nurses' Fellowship Secretary and Captain was the Assistant Financial Secretary. They were appointed to Massachusetts where Mrs. Abery was again the Nurses' Fellowship Secretary plus assisting in the Home League Department.
Between January 1963 and January 1968 their three daughters, Karen, Kenwyn and Jennifer were born. IN August 1974 the family moved to Zaire, Africa where Mrs. Abery was part of the medical team that visited the villages in a mobile ambulance and Captain Abery was the Territorial Financial Secretary.
They returned home in 1978 and were appointed to North East Ohio where Mrs. Abery was the League of Mercy Secretary and Captain Abery was the Divisional Financial Secretary. Next, an appointment to the School for Officers' Training in New York in August 1980 where Mrs. Abery served first as Assistant Director of Child Care and then as the Health Officer.
Another call to overseas service in 1982 was to Seoul, Korea where Mrs. Abery taught English to the Cadets at the Training College, assisted her husband in the Finance Department and was responsible for the Help the Aged program at the Old Peoples' Home.
While attending the International College for Officers from July to September 1986 Mrs. Abery was taken ill and after her husband joined her in London they flew to New York on September 13, 1986. Following ten months of medical treatments and a valiant strong spirited battle she was 'Promoted to Glory' on June 30, 1987.
