Obituary
Laura “Virginia” Wilson, 88, of Pittsburg died at 5:52 a.m. Saturday, April 23, 2011 at the Girard Medical Center at Girard, Kansas.
The second oldest of nine children, Virginia was born November 10, 1922 in Linn County, Kansas the daughter of Chesley and Esther Whitson Mathews.
She grew up on their Kansas farm north of Mound City. At the age of eight, Virginia contracted polio, and while many would have considered her handicapped, Virginia was known for her strong will and ability to persevere without assistance.
She will be remembered and honored as a beloved daughter and sister; a devoted wife; a kind, loving Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother; and admired friend.
After high school, Virginia moved to Kansas City to attend college and work for the Salvation Army.
In 1957, she married Harry Wilson, they later divorced.
While in Kansas City, they opened a transfer and moving company.
In 1962, Virginia moved to Pittsburg, Kansas, where she worked and managed the Pittsburg Salvation Army Thrift Store. She was also a dedicated member of the Salvation Army Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher for many years.
She retired from the Census Bureau in 1978 before opening Wilson Tax and Notary.
Survivors include her son, Richard Wilson and his wife Diana of Pittsburg and their children, Michael, Christine, and Jason and wife Jenny; a daughter Lisa Carter and husband Allen of Lamar, Missouri and their children, Luther Jessica, and Justin; her sister Esther Stanbrough of Mound City, Kansas; two brothers, Thruman Mathews of Marion, Ohio and Neal Mathews of Pleasanton, Kansas; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Flossie Amick, and brothers, Allen, Joe, Harold, and Richard Mathews.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 25, 2011 at the Bedene Funeral Home at Arma with Father Larry Parker officiating.
Burial will be at the Woodland Cemetery at Mound City, Kansas.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Bedene Chapel at Arma.
