Obituary
Brigadier Ruth A. Baker, 73, of East Stroudsburg, died Monday morning at the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg.
Born in Hazleton, she was a daughter of the late John and Amelia (Deis) Blakeslee.
She was a member of the East Stroudsburg Salvation Army Women's Home League; the program director for the Senior Citizens for the past 10 years; the League of mercy secretary for Nursing Home and Hospital Visitation for 10 years; a member of the local Salvation Army Corps Council in East Stroudsburg for seven years; and a visiting chaplain at the Ladore Conference Center in Waymart for the past 10 years.
She was director of the Senior Citizen Program in Sharon, Mass., for four years, out of Boston Divisional Headquarters.
She was commissioned in New York City at the Salvation Army Territorial Headquarters in 1942. She and her husband, Brigadier Henry G. Baker, were stationed at 11 different Corps appointments in the Eastern Territory for more than 42 years. They retired in 1983 from the Salvation Army Correctional Services in New York City.
She had been active in the Monroe County community since retiring.
Surviving in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Nancy L. Transue, East Stroudsburg; a sister, Gertrude Kosslop, Hazleton; a brother, John “Jack” Blakeslee, Nesquehoning; two grandchildren and one great-grandson. Many Nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Salvation Army Citadel, 226 Washington St., East Stroudsburg, with Major James Shotzberger and Major Herbert Hamilton officiating.
Interment will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Drums, with Major John Swires officiating.
Friends may call today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Salvation Army Citadel, East Stroudsburg.
