Obituary
Henry G. Berkhoudt , 91, of Saco, died on Saturday, May 1, 2004 at the Pine Point Nursing home, after a long illness.
He was born on Aug. 19, 1912 in Utrecht, the Netherlands, a son of Wilhelmina and John Berkhoudt. The family migrated to the United States in 1914, settling in Buffalo, N.Y. and Henry's schooling took place entirely in Buffalo. He was an apprentice under his father, continuing in the family business of painting and decorating. In 1935, he married Phyllis Tripp, and later entered the Salvation Army's School for Officer Training. He served in appointments in the Bronx, N.Y. and in Jamaica, N.Y. and then spent 22 years in the Army's headquarters in New York City, working with the youth in the Eleven States . He worked with the inner city youth at Tecumseh Village in New Jersey for 13 years.
'The Gallileon' a series of Black and White sketches and commentary, depicting the life of Christ, done by Henry, has been distributed around the world.
He retired to Maine in 1977, where Henry taught painting classes at the Salvation Army in Old Orchard Beach and at the Pines in Ocean Park. Annual art exhibits have been held at Ocean Park and in Old Orchard Beach.
Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Phyllis; a daughter, Gail Lipinski of Utica, N.Y.; two grandsons; and two great - grandchildren; a brother, Clark Berkhoudt; a sister, Wilhelmina Guldenschuh; and many nieces and nephews.
