Hamilton Mockabee

Hamilton Elliot Mockabee was the father of a Salvationist and a veteran of the American Civil War.

Obituary

Hamilton C. Mockabee died at the home of his son Thorton T. Mockabee on North Second Street, Guthrie, Saturday, January 20, at 12:10 A.M., aged 82 years old.

The funeral was held Sunday Jan. 21, Rev. G. W. McCluskey conducting the services, interment being made at Summit View cemetery.

The deceased was born in Lawrence County, Kentucky, April 17, 1840. His father served in the war of 1812 and on September 11, 1861, he enlisted in the Union Army from Fleming county, Kentucky and served until he was mustered out of service on December 27, 1863. He was wounded in the battle of Chicamauga but did not go to the hospital, was in all engagements and skirmishes of his regiment up to and including the battle of Nashville, Tenn. He made a gallant record for meritorious service and soldierly conduct at all time and received an honorable discharge at Huntsville, Ala.

He had been an active member of the G. A. R. for many years, was commander of Henry Palmer Post No. 41 of Kentucky for two years and officer of the Guard of Hartranft Post, No. 3 of Guthrie at the time of his death.

The deceased had been in bad health for the past seven months and was a patient sufferer. He was a good citizen and a Christian and most of his life had been an active Church worker. He met the last enemy like a brave soldier and passed away with a face calm and serene not a shadow on his countenance.

He leaves to mourn his loss nine children: Ed Mockabee, Perry Okla.; George Mockabee, Holley, Colo.; Mrs. Sarah McReynold, Sharon, Kans.; Mrs. Amanda J. Ward, Medford, Okla.; Mrs. Anna Wadkins, Sun City, Kans.; Mrs. Jack Hollingsworth, Tulsa, Okla.; Luther Mockabee, Guthrie, Okla.; Thornton T. Mockabee, Guthrie, Okla.; Mrs. Elizabeth Sauhoff, Tulsa, Okla.; a tenth having preceded him to join the mother in the great beyond.
