'This food will help feed an empty stomach, hungry souls and bring hope to many'

Captain Joel Ashcraft, divisional secretary of The Salvation Army in Greater Cleveland, praised a partnership with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to ease food insecurity in Northeast Ohio on Aug. 14. Ashcraft made his remarks during a fundraising concert in Cleveland featuring “The Voice” season nine winner Jordan Smith.

“Hunger is an ongoing epidemic in our country,” Ashcraft said. “According to Feeding America, 18.4% of residents are food insecure in Cuyahoga County. We continue to see the lines grow outside our food pantries as inflation rises and the cost of essential goods increases.”

According to a press release, the Church of LDS will donate 100 tons of food by year-end that The Salvation Army, and others, will use address food insecurity in the area. Another concert on Sept. 16 featuring Christian recording artist Michael W. Smith at Playhouse Square will also help raise awareness.

“The donation of food has taken my breath away,“ Ashcraft said. “The sheer generosity and care of one organization to do the work of Jesus Christ is astounding. This food will help feed an empty stomach, hungry souls and bring hope to many in our Greater Cleveland community,”
