Students Honored

Kenneth and Helen Gombert are to leave for the Salvation Army's Training College in New York City and a farewell service was held in their honor last evening at Salvation Army Citadel. Both young people graduated from West Pittston High School.

Get Commissions In Salvation Army

Mr. and Mrs. George Gombert of 717 Wyoming avenue, West Pittston, have returned from New York after attending the commissioning of their son, Cadet Kenneth Gombert and his wife, the former Helen Williamson, in the Salvation Army.

They received the commissions of probationary captains and will be in command of the Salvation Army Corps at Lewistown, Pa. Previous to training at the Salvation Army College, New York, Mr. and Mrs. Gombert were in command of the Tunkhannock Corps in the capacity of envoy.

The newly appointed officers will spend a vacation with local relatives before assuming their duties at Lewistown.

Rev. Kenneth Gombert Accepts New Charge

Rev. Kenneth V. Gombert, pastor of St. Paul's Methodist Church for two and a half years, has accepted pastorate of the Methodist Church in Taylor, effective September 1.

Rev. Mr. Gombert is a son of Mr. and Mrs. George I. Gombert of Wyoming Avenue, West Pittston. He was graduated from Pittston High School and was engaged in Salvation Army work for several years before entering the Methodist ministry. He was graduated from Juanita College, Huntingdon, attended Westminster Theological Seminary in Maryland and was graduated in June from the Evangelical School of Theology in Reading.

Rev. Mr. Gombert is married to the former Helen M. Williamson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Williamson, Franklin Street, West Pittston. They have one son, Kenneth, Jr.

Obituary

Helen M. Williamson, 97, formerly of Pittston and West Pittston, died Friday, June 5, 2015, in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. She had previously been a guest at River Run Health Care Center, Kingston.

Helen was born in Pittston, daughter of the late Clyde Allen and Harriett Kocher Williamson, and was a graduate of the Class of 1935, West Pittston High School. She was also a graduate of The Salvation Army College, New York, in 1942, served as a captain in central Pennsylvania and worked especially with children. Following her retirement from The Salvation Army, Helen worked for Fowler, Dick and Walker, The Boston Store, in Binghamton, N.Y., and Wilkes-Barre for more than 20 years.

Helen was a member of the West Pittston Salvation Army Corps and was a former organist and member of the Women's Missionary Society of the West Pittston Assembly of God. She was an accomplished pianist and organist and played for the Senior Centers of the Bureau of Aging and West Pittston Chapter 397, Order of the Eastern Star. She loved her church and spent time there and in helping others.

There are no survivors.

A private committal service was held June 8 at Mountain View Cemetery, Harding.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday during the regular morning service of the West Pittston Corps, The Salvation Army, 214 Luzerne Ave., West Pittston. Capt. Misty Coffelt, West Pittston Salvation Army Corps, will officiate.

It is requested that flowers be omitted and that memorial donations in Helen's name be made to the West Pittston Corps, The Salvation Army, 214 Luzerne Ave., West Pittston, PA 18643.

Arrangements are by H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home Inc., a Golden Rule funeral Home, 211 Luzerne Ave., West Pittston.
