Obituary
Florence Needham, age 93, passed away peacefully at her home in Decatur, Georgia on Saturday, May 24, 2008. Born in Slab Fork, W. Va. on Nov. 18 1914, she grew up in South Charleston, W. Va., where she became a member of the Salvation Army. As a young adult, she entered the Salvation Army Officer Training College in 1933 and was commissioned as an officer the following year. She served two assignments with The Salvation Army before being appoint to Selma, Alabama, where she met and married John Dunmore Needham. Together they served as Salvation Army officers in local pastoral appointments (Fairmont, W. Va.; Baltimore, Md.; Parkersburg, W. Va.; Tampa, Fla.); as officer training college staff (Atlanta, Ga.); in administrative leadership (North and South Carolina, Georgia, National Capital and Virginia); and as territorial leaders in the Caribbean Terr., the Central Terr. USA; and the British Terr. Their final appointment was as national leaders for the USA.
Predeceased by her husband, she retired to live in the Atlanta area in 1983, where she has served faithfully as a member and active participant in the Atlanta Temple Corps (Church). Throughout her active officership and her retirement years she specialized in women's ministry, encouraged countless individuals through cards and letters, blessed children, prayed for those in need, tirelessly gave of herself to helping others, and shared her remarkable gift of hospitality with both family and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Miriam Needham of Atlanta, Ga., by three sons, Walter Needham of Stone Mt., Ga., Phil Needham of Tucker, Ga., and John Needham of Louisville, KY., by seven grandchildren and by thirteen great grandchildren. Visitation with the family will take place on Wednesday, May 28, 6:30-8:30PM, at the H.M. Patterson and Son Spring Hill Funeral Home at 1020 Spring Street, Atlanta, and one hour before the funeral service the following day. The funeral service will take place at the Atlanta Temple Corps for The Salvation Army at 2090 N. Druid Hills Rd., NE on Thurs., May 29 at 10AM, followed by the committal at Westview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the World Services Fund of the Atlanta Temple Corp.
