Joan Agan Was Caregiver For Her Family And Others
Joan Agan was the kind of aunt you loved having around at Christmas.
“She successfully spoiled everyone that she cared for,” said her niece, Valery Prill.
Agan died Saturday from congestive heart failure. She was 75.
Born in Flint, Mich., Agan found her niche in the Salvation Army and rose to the rank of captain. All three of her sisters were officers in the Salvation Army.
Agan and her late husband, Kenneth, had no children, which left an open door to shower attention on everybody else, something Prill said her aunt approached with vigor.
Say you really like chocolate chip cookies, and not just any kind of chocolate chip cookies but a particular brand. Prill said her aunt would scour every store and market to see that you had what you craved.
“She would spend a lot of time making sure people had not just what they had to have, but what they liked,” Prill said.
Such effort, Prill said, from a woman who endured diabetes and three bouts of cancer.
“Our aunt lived a very full life. She also was a fighter,” Prill said.
Back in Michigan, during this time of the year, Agan would stand next to a red Salvation Army kettle and ring a bell as a gentle reminder for folks to give to those less fortunate, said niece Sharon Smith.
“Her whole life was devoted to caregiving,” Smith said. “She was very good at caring for other people.”
How good?
“When her sister got divorced, she even cared for her sister's ex-mother-in-law,” Smith said. “That's big-hearted.”
Agan, who moved to orlando in 1979, also is survived by a sister, Eleanor Clark of Orlando. She had two stepchildren, Barb and Judy Agan, as well as a step-granddaughter, Patti Bancroft of Memphis, Tenn.; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Baldwin Fairchild Ivanhoe Chapel in Sanford is handling arrangements.
