Obituary
Mrs. Edith Bates, wife of Salvation Army Commissioner Claude E. Bates and an unfailing visitor to the sick, died in a San Francisco hospital yesterday after an illness of several months.
She was head of the Army's league of Mercy which visits hospital patients.
Mrs. Bates, the daughter of a Salvation Army commissioner, had been a member of the organizations since 1914.
When her husband was transferred to Chicago last month as commissioner of the Army's Central Territory, from his post in San Francisco as head of the Western Territory, she was unable to accompany him because of her health.
The couple had served in Salvation Army posts all over the country. They have three children, including a son, John, who is stationed in the Bay area with the Coast Guard.
Last rites will be held at the Citadel Auditorium, 101 Valencia Street, San Francisco, at 10 a.m. tomorrow. Interment will be at Valhalla, N.Y.
