Sowton served several field appointments in England and three years as Field Officer in Scotland where he was promoted to the Staff. After a short experience as a Divisional Officer in England, he was appointed to take charge of the newly opened country of Norway. From Norway, he was in charge of Denmark as Colonel and then the Chief Secretary of Sweden. Then to the United States to take charge of the rapidly developing Scandinavian work where he spent the first three years in New York and the remaining four years in Chicago where he was appointed as Provincial Officer. After this, he was again appointed in charge of the work in Denmark, then Chief Secretary for Canada in 1907. In 1909, he was appointed Chief Secretary for the India and Ceylon Territory then back to Canada to be the Territorial Commander for Canada West as Commissioner. In 1919, Territorial Commander of Sweden then 1921, of Canada and Bermuda.
