Col. William G. Harris, 70, retired Salvation Army officer, of 1400 Webb St., died yesterday at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune, after a short illness.
He started a career with the Salvation Army in 1920 when commissioned after graduating from its International Training College, London. He became a training garrison sergeant there.
Col. Harris was born in Brighton, England, and lived in New York City before coming here a year ago. He served in France with the Royal Air Force during World War I.
He and his wife, Mrs. Ruth Webber Harris, were missionaries among the lepers of Java, Indonesia, and they also served in Celebes.
He came to the United States as a member of the editorial department of the 11-state Eastern Territory in 1926, and in 1947, was appointed international editor-in-chief at the world headquarters of the organization in London.
His various assignments have taken him to Scandinavian countries as well as to all sections of the British Isles. He had been principal of the Salvation Army School for Officers' Training in Bronx, N.Y.
When Col. Harris retired in 1962, he continued to write for Salvation Army publications, became the organization's consultant, and was the author of two books.
He held a bachelor of music degree, was a life member of the Royal Society of Teachers, and was an associate of the American Guild of Organists. While in the Royal Air Force, he was a wireless radio operator. He was a member of the Salvation Army Retired Officers League.
Also surviving are a brother, Rodney K. Harris, Truro, Cornwall, and two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Hart, Brighton, and Mrs. Ruby Tourle, Hove, all England.
