Holland was accepted into Army ministry in April 1885 and was sent to the Liverpool Headquarters as a scribe. In July 1886 he appointed to Manchester and on August 18, 1886 was appointed to Southern D.W. as Captain. In March 1887 was appointed to Village War and in June of the same year as A.D.C. to Major Andrews with a promotion to Staff-Captain.

On August 31, 1888 he was appointed as A.D.C. to Staff Captain Heathcote. Then Divisional Officer for Leicester and Birmingham Divisions. In January 1889 he was appointed A.D.C. to Major Harding of the London and Central Divisions. He then took command of the Training Home operations of the Junior Soldier’s Staff and Field Officers in the Central Division.
