Colonel Sydney Charles Maidment was commissioned in 1887. He died in the sinking of the Empress of Ireland.

In 1890, Captain Maidment was stationed in Copenhagen, Denmark. He had an appointment in Amsterdam, and Cape Town, South Africa. In 1911 and 1912 he spent some time in Kingston, Jamaica.
