In celebration of National Salvation Army Week, which runs from May 10 to 16, The Salvation Army of Scranton is proud to honor Steve Oaten as its 2021 Hero of Hope for the impact he has made on our local community members in need, especially over the last pandemic year.
Oaten, resident of Taylor, Pa., is the Corps Sergeant Major, Property Manager and Food Pantry Coordinator of The Salvation Army Scranton Citadel Corps. During his tenure and especially over the span of the COVID-19 pandemic, Oaten has worked tirelessly to ensure that The Salvation Army continues providing services on the frontlines to those who have struggled to provide for themselves and their families. Specifically, Oaten has assisted with food distribution to hundreds of families every month.
Oaten is one of a select number of representatives throughout Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware, as well as nationwide, who have been honored as The Salvation Army’s Heroes of Hope.
“Without Steve’s passion and dedication to supporting his local community and helping struggling neighbors to get back on their feet, The Salvation Army would not have been able to serve the region and country in the way that it has over the last year,” said Lt. Col. Larry Ashcraft, Divisional Commander for The Salvation Army of Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware. “It’s our Heroes of Hope who are helping us carry our mission of serving our neighbors, even as we enter a new normal.”
The Salvation Army of Scranton encourages community members who are able to be Heroes of Hope for their struggling neighbors, just like Oaten. By becoming a sustaining donor and making “The $25 Difference” through a recurring monthly gift, community members can help The Salvation Army combat pandemic poverty and reach even more individuals and families in need of assistance.
