A day care program for children 3-5 years old will be sponsored by the Salvation Army, and is expected to be in operation sometime in June, Captain Raymond Simpson announced.
The purpose of the day care program is to provide a “group life which furthers the social, educational, and spiritual development of young children,” Simpson said.
Games, dramatization, field trips, and directed indoor and outdoor physical activities and free play are planned.
The program is still in the planning stages, Simpson said, and the activities will be set up to correspond with the ages of the children who will participate.
Simpson said there will be a grassy area as well as a paved area available for the children to play. Recreation equipment such as swings and a sandbox will be purchased as money is available.
Joann Cress, one of the persons who will help take care of the children, said the children will be provided a kitchen, bathroom and multi-purpose room and gym area on one level.
Gretchen Simpson, who is a teacher, will be working with child care program, as well as other Salvation Army staff members who worked with children previously, Simpson said.
The child care attendants hope to teach the children some of the basics for school, but subject matter will not be decided definitely until the ages of the children are determined.
The requirements for children to be enrolled in the program are: children must be 3-5 years old, potty trained, and application and medical forms must be completed by the parents.
Child care will be available from 6:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Children must be taken to the Salvation Army at 1300 W. Spruce St., by the parent.
Breakfast and lunch for the children will be available, Simpson said.
A fee of $25 per child must be paid each Monday by the parent.
The program is not funded by the state or federal government, so no restrictions are put on the persons eligible to take advantage of the program, Simpson said.
Applications for registration are available at the Salvation Army, 1300 W. Spruce St.
