Commissioner Richard E Holz graduated from the Salvation Army School for Officers Training in 1938. He served as a chaplain in the South Pacific with the Airborne Engineers, Fifth Air force during World War II from 1942 to 1946. He is buried in Kensico Cemetery.

Richard E. Holz, 71, a Salvation Army officer with the rank of commissioner, died Friday at Jersey Shore Medical Center. He retired in 1981.
Mr. Holz was a graduate of the Salvation Army School for Officers Training, New York City, receiving his commission in 1938.
In World War II he served as a chaplain in the South Pacific with the Airborne Engineers, Fifth Air Force, from 1942 to 1946.
After leaving the military, Mr. Holz was named head of the Salvation Army's Eastern Territorial Music Department and served as bandmaster of the New York Staff Band for 18 years.
In 1971, he and his wife were sent to Sidney, Australia, where he was chief secretary of the Salvation Army there and in New Guinea. Three years later he was appointed commander of the Western Territory and six years later took command of the Central Territory.
He was a member of Asbury Park Corps, Salvation Army; past president of the Salvation Army Retired Officers League; and guest conductor of the Asbury Park Citadel Corps Band. he was a major with the Army Reserve at the time of his death.
Mr. Holz was born in Pittston, Pa., and moved to Neptune in 1981.
Surviving are his wife, the former Ruby Walker; his mother, Keitha W., Coral Gables, Fla.; three sons, Richard E., Atlanta, Robert W., Arlington Heights, Ill. and Ronald W., Willmoare, Ky.; a daughter, Keitha H. Needham, Decature, Ga.; four brothers, Ernest, Swansboro, N.C., Wilson, Longwood, Fla., David, Charlotte, N.C., and Edwy, Miami; three sisters, Edith Charnock, Halmet, Calif., Keitha Young, Seattle, and Nancy E., Coral Gables, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
