Obituary

Commissioner Paul J. Carlson, a former national commander of the Salvation Army, died of a heart attack Sunday at the Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, N.J. He was 78 years old and lived in Asbury Park, N.J.

The son of parents who were Salvation Army officers, Commissioner Carlson devoted his life to the organization and received its 50-year service medal. He retired in 1974.

Surviving are his wife, the former Ethel Glasco; 3 daughters, Dorothy de Paz, Ethel Jackson and Jean Rich; 13 grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter.
