French has paid the great sacrifice in the cause of the organization to whose service his life had been devoted. News of Commissioner French's death has just been received at the Salvation Army's territorial headquarters here by cablegram. Few details surrounding his death were contained in the advice. It is known, however, that he, in the performance of his work, was on a long journey into the interior of Western India. While on this trip he was stricken with smallpox. Commissioner French was born in Bristol, England, and was 58 years old. He entered the Salvation Army in 1882. He became prominently known among San Franciscans at the time of the fire when he organized and directed the Salvation Army's portion of the city's relief. In recognition of this work and other constructive undertakings while Provincial Officer in California, he was promoted to second in command of the Western territory, the headquarters of which at that time were in Chicago. From Chicago he was transferred to Korea and from Korea to Bombay, India. In India he adopted the Indian Name Ajeet Singh, and during his short term of a little more than a year, he made remarkable progress in advancing the work of the Salvation Army in Western India. Commissioner French is survived by a widow and five children, two of whom are in the Salvation Army here. These are [[Holland French|Captain Holland French]], assistant to the Territorial Treasurer here; [[Minnie French Wiseman|Miss Minnie French]], a cadet officer, Lincoln French and Mrs. Captain Glydon Huffman, stationed at Bismarck, North Dakota. ====External==== * [[https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/218785863/george_thomas_weadon-french|Find a Grave]]
