Marshall, national commander of the Salvation Army from 1957 to 1963, died yesterday at his home in Asbury Park, N.J. He was 85 years old. \\ \\ Mr. Marshall, a third‐generation member of the Salvation Army, was born on Sept. 16, 1893, in Worcester, Mass., and became a commissioned officer in 1915. \\ \\ In 1917, he married the former [[Marjorie Miles Marshall|Marjorie Miles]], a captain in the Salvation Army and herself a third‐generation member of the organization. He served in the United States Army m World War 1 and became one of the first Salvation Army chaplains assigned to an infantry division. \\ \\ After the war he rose rapidly through the ranks of the Salvation Army, serving in Chicago, Detroit, Iowa, Kansas, Atlanta and New York. In 1946 he became the organization's central territorial commander, with headquarters in Chicago, and in 1953 moved to New York to serve as eastern territorial commander. \\ \\ Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, [[Norman S Marshall II|Commissioner Norman Marshall]] of London, who is international secretary of the Salvation Army, and Richard Charles Marshall of St. Louis; two daughters, Mrs. James Henderson of Teaneck, N.J., and Mrs. Edythe G.
