Lovejoy, a single mom, works until about 5 p.m. By the time she picks them up, they have finished their homework, played a good lot of active games - everything from basketball to Frisbee - and had a meal. \\ \\ "It really helps," said Lovejoy. Her life has had its share of ups and downs, but one constant that has helped her get through has been the Salvation Army. \\ \\ "They work with parents," said Lovejoy, when she picked up the boys Monday from the Canandaigua Salvation Army's Phoenix After School program. Knowing her boys are safe and happy when she picks them up means less stress and more relaxed family time, she said. \\ \\ "It's a good program," said Raya Plate, whose children, Nicholas, 9, and Gianna, 7, are in the program. The kids "learn manners," and the staff and volunteers are "good with the kids," she said. \\ \\ On a typical day, about 45 children attend the after-school program that is no charge to parents and helps fill a growing need in the community at a time when parents are having trouble making ends meet. \\ \\ According to the New York State Department of Labor, nearly 45,000 people are jobless in Finger Lakes region, a figure that doesn't account for those who are employed in jobs paying less and offering fewer or no benefits. \\ \\ "We are seeing a lot more of the working poor," said John Hussey, lieutenant at the Canandaigua Salvation Army. \\ \\ That means even those employed are stretched financially. \\ \\ The Phoenix After School program is one of many Salvation Army programs and services offered in the Canandaigua area from the corps based at 110 Saltonstall St. in the city. Providing meal and activity programs for senior citizens and assistance for citizens in need with heating and rental costs are among ways the Salvation Army helps boost the quality of life for many in the community. \\ \\ Hussey said a recent shift in staffing to help the former head of the Canandaigua Salvation Army, Major [[Robert Ginter]], at his new post in Buffalo, left a gap in staffing in Canandaigua. Major Robert Ginter's wife, Major [[Donna Ginter]], died unexpectedly in September, not long after the couple left Canandaigua for Buffalo. Two staffers were reassigned to Buffalo. While one position was filled by a new hire, Youth Ministries Director Will Maskrey, it still leaves a great need for volunteers to help out at the Canandaigua Salvation Army, Hussey said. \\ \\ Today, the Salvation Army kicks off its annual Red Kettle campaign with a media event at the Saltonstall Street headquarters. It marks the start of the annual holiday kettle campaign, when volunteers collect donations in the signature red kettles outside businesses and other public places. All proceeds go to help those in the Canandaigua area, said Hussey: "The more we raise with the kettles the more we can help." \\ \\ Unlike in decades past, government funding is not available for many social service programs like those at the Salvation Army. Sharon Henry, a retired teacher who has run the homework-help service during the Phoenix After School program since it began in 1996, recalled a matching grant of federal and city funds got the service off the ground and funded it for the first few years. After that, it was up to the Salvation Army to keep it going. \\ \\ Though times change, the need for the types of programs and services the Salvation Army provides remains. \\ \\ Using the homework service as an example, Henry, who taught for many years in the Canandaigua Primary School, said children need one-on=one help and support. \\ \\ "They need to go to school the next day with confidence - and the feeling they did a good job," Henry said. ====External==== * eusa marching orders * [[https://www.mpnnow.com/story/news/2011/08/15/new-blood-at-salvation-army/45004377007/|New blood at the Salvation Army: The Hussey Family]] * [[https://www.mpnnow.com/story/lifestyle/2011/11/16/salvation-army-after-school-program/45645799007/|Salvation Army After-School Program Helps Strapped Parents]]
