Baker, Stroudsburg, formerly of Hazleton, will be guest speakers at the 11 a.m. service Sunday at the local Salvation Army Citadel. The Bakers, both of whom are Hazleton High School graduates, recently retired after 43 years service with the Salvation Army. After attending the Salvation Army's School for Officers Training in New York City, they served as corps officers in Ohio, Pennsylvania and the New England states, served two appointments as divisional correctional services secretaries in Boston, Mass., and in their last assignment, in New York City, they were responsible for work in federal and state prisons and directed a halfway house operated by The Salvation Army in Manhattan. The couple will be honored Aug. 27 at the [[East Stroudsburg PA|East Stroudsburg Citadel]] when Comissioner Norman Marshall, the Salvation Army's national commander, will present their reitrement certificates. //The Lewistown Sentinel// ====Obituary==== Brigadier Henry G. Baker, 86, of Stroudsburg, passed away early Saturday morning, November 17, at the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth (Blakeslee) Baker with whom he shared 50 years of marriage at the time of her death in 1995. \\ \\ Born on February 23, 1921 in Hazleton, he was a son of the late Wenner and Margaret Baker. He was a 1940 graduate of Hazleton High School and then was commissioned and ordained as a Lieutenant from the Salvation Army Training School for Officers in New York City. The Baker family served in eleven different appointments in the Eastern Territory as Salvation Army Officers during their 43 year career. He retired in 1983 following his serving as Divisional Correctional Secretary in Boston, MA. After retirement he served on the staff of the local Citadel as well as being employed for a short time at Mr. Z's market and with WalMart when they opened in the area. He remained active in the local Salvation Army Citadel and started a regular visitation and service ministry at the Monroe County Correctional Facility. He also acted as Chaplain at the Salvation Army's Sr. Citizen Camp Lodge during the summer at Lake Ladore in Waymart. \\ \\ The Brigadier was a charter member of the Optismist Club of the Stroudsburgs and served as president, secretary and treasurer for a number of years. He participated in the Men's Prayer Breakfast at the East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church; was active in the Boy Scouts of America in most every area in which he served and he received the Exchange Clubs Golden Deeds award in 1987. He was a delegate to the Salvation Army's Centenial Celebration in London, England in 1965 and a delegate at the International College for Officers in Sydenham, England in 1970. Briagier received a special award for having made a contribution for the good of Scranton where he was stationed for some four years. \\ \\ He is survived by his loving wife, Louise (Marchant) Baker, to whom he was married in December 1997; a daughter, Nancy Transue and her husband, Ross, of East Stroudsburg; two grandchildren, Tammy Ems and her husband Frank, of Stroudsburg and Gary Transue and his wife Kelley, of Plain City, OH; three great grandchildren, Frankie and Colby Ems and Josh and Seth Transue; a brother, Robert Baker, of Hazleton and his wife's family: Francis and Beverly Herbert and their step-children, Christopher and Mark. \\ \\ There will be a viewing on Tuesday, November 20, from 9:00 to 10:00AM at the Salvation Army Citadel, 226 Washington St., East Stroudsburg. A service of "life celebration" will take place on Tuesday at 10:00AM at the Salvation Army with Major James Shotzberger and Major Herbert Hamilton officiating.
