====Pugmire Denies Salvation Army Loses Its Identity====
Commissioner Ernest I. Pugmire, territorial commander of the Salvation Army in eleven Eastern States, told Salvationist leaders of the United Service Organizations at a conference in the Hotel Gramatan here today that the reputation and the future of the Salvation Army would not be impaired by the present union with five other groups in operating the USO.

====Commands Shifted In Salvation Army====
Commissioner Ernest I. Pugmire, national commander of the Salvation Army, has been relieved of his additional duties as Eastern territorial commander in charge of eleven states, by [[Albert Orsborn|Gen. Albert Orsborn]], international commander. Commissioner Pugmire will devote his entire time to national affairs and his position as Eastern territorial commander will be taken by [[Donald McMillan|Commissioner Donald McMillan]], now national secretary.

====Obituary====
Ernest I. Pugmire, 65 years old, national commander of the Salvation Army since 1944, collapsed and died today while walking on Fourteenth street at Sixth avenue, near the Salvation Army's national headquarters. He lived in Wyckoff, N.J.

Mr. Pugmire was stricken while walking from a subway station to his office. He was dead when an ambulance arrived.

Born in Kansas City, Mo., he had served forty-six years with the Salvation Army in the United States, Canada, China and Japan.

===Organized Earthquake Relief===
He organized the Salvation Army's earthquake relief program after the Japanese earthquake of 1923. He was the army's secretary for Japan at the time.

Mr. Pugmire had been stationed in the New York office since 1942. He came here as the territorial commander for the East.
\\ \\
He also was a vice-president and a director of the United Service organizations.
\\ \\
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Grace Pugmire; five children; Mrs. Aubrey Malphurs, Gainesville, Fla.; Mrs. F. Richmond Chadwick, Macon, Ga.; Mrs. John McLeod, Atlanta, Ga.; Mrs. Herbert E. Gearing, Orlando, Fla., and Arthur W. Pugmire, Manteno, Ill.; three borhters, Lieut. Col. Herbert Pugmire, Indianapolis; Senior Major Percy Pugmire, stationed in London, and Arthur Pugmire, of Lakewood, O., and a sister, Mrs. Charles Rogers of Toronto, Canada.

Mr. Pugmire was born here March 4, 1888, in a house which stood at 1027 Cherry street. He was the son of Col. Joseph Pugmire, who founded Salvation Army work here in 1885. Both his parents were English and for many years he traveled abroad on a British passport until an alert American consul employee pointed out that he was actually an American citizen because he was born in this country.

===Visited Here in 1950===
His last visit here was in 1950 when he traveled here to take part in the Kansas City Centennial ceremonies marking the contribution of the Salvation Army to the city.
