Captain James H. Eager was a case manager/drug rehabilitation counselor with The Salvation Army in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from October 1998 to August 2002 before entering training. He was appointed to the [[Lewistown PA|Lewistown, Pennsylvania Corps]] with his wife prior to their resignations as officers.

====Salvation Army Needs Community Support To Answer Bell====
The calls for help at Christmas time are heartbreaking, said Capt. James Eager, executive officer of the Salvation Army.

One call stands out, he said, as Christmas nears and the requests continue coming in at an average of 20 a day, up 35 percent over last year when the Salvation Army provided gifts for more than 400 families.
\\ \\
The call was from a man who had no idea how to ask for help, said Eager. He told Eager he had to return the Christmas presents to pay the mortgage.

“It broke my heart,” said Eager.
\\ \\
Even though the deadline for applying for holiday help is passed, “Salvation Army will take care of the family,” he said.
\\ \\
There are more and more stories like that.
\\ \\
Eager said 15 to 20 percent of requests are from people who have never asked before. They come from Brockton, the Bridgewaters, Avon, Abington, Holbrook and beyond.
\\ \\
This is just one of Salvation Army’s programs that help the needy. The food pantry and heating fund are separate programs that look to The Enterprise Charitable Foundation’s Helping Hands Fund for supplemental funds that are used for necessities, including rental assistance, heat and food. One hundred percent of the money donated by readers to the Helping Hands Fund is distributed to local agencies that help the needy.

The Salvation Army relies largely on the annual kettle drive to provide holiday gifts. Angel trees, located in WalMart and other major stores, at Salvation Army thrift stores and at Westgate Mall, are also a huge source of gifts. Visitors to any of the locations take a tag off the tree and buy a gift for that person.

“The generosity of people is still there,” said Eager.
\\ \\
Most of the gift requests on the angel trees are filled. The few that are left are taken care of by the Salvation Army.

Even as he prepares to deliver the gifts early next week, the calls keep coming in, but this year, cash donations are flat.
\\ \\
The kettle drive — represented by the red kettles at malls and other retail outlets during the holiday season — is about the same as last year, but not keep up with the increase in requests, he said.

“It’s a reflection of the times,” said Eager, who is determined to help all that ask.
\\ \\
“We had a deadline for applications, but the Salvation Army doesn't say no,” he added.
