+====Life Here Continues, But Others Are Not Forgotten====
+One thing that was evident in Bradford and the surrounding communities on Wednesday was that the people did not forget the tragedy of a year ago.

+This was apparent throughout the entire day with patriotic activities taking place at schools, businesses, agencies and churches in memory of Sept. 11, 2001.
+\\ \\
+The earliest activity began with a memorial service at Bradford City Hall, followed by activities at schools that included flag-raising ceremonies and a gathering of George G. Blaisdell Elementary students to honor the flag. There was also a commemorative blood drive, evening church services and a panel discussion at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.

+A visit to the Community Blood Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania in Union Square revealed a busy staff taking care of a steady stream of donors participating in the "Day of Silent Heroes" blood drive. The blood bank held the drive in conjunction with Bradford Regional Medical Center, Emergycare and WESB/WBRR radio.

+One woman waiting to give blood said she was donating because her husband was in the U.S. Air Force and soon would be leaving to go overseas.

+Another donor, John Wells, said he gave regularly but decided to donate on Wednesday because of the significance of Sept. 11.

+"I just wanted to give a contribution of any kind in any way," Mr. Wells said while giving blood.
+\\ \\
+Mr. Wells said he was participating in the blood bank's "Battle of the Badges" competition that was held between the police department, fire department and emergency medical services. Donors who gave blood between Sept. 2. and 11 could designate their blood donation in honor of one of the three groups.

+"A lot of people were brand new donors, whcih was very encouraging," said Lori Stelle, a registered nurse with the blood bank.
+\\ \\
+Later in the evening, residents attended church services held at First United Methodist Church and Foursquare Gospel Church.

+At First United, a large audience heard comments from American Red Cross director Greg Ulyan and Capt. Paul Knicerbocker of the Salvation Army. Both had helped at Ground Zero.
+\\ \\
+"I have a simple request of all of you ... to promise to remember, support and prepare," Mr. Ulyan said.
+\\ \\
+He said he wanted people to remember the outpouring of help during and after the tragedy, the support given by the entire nation and the need to prepare for any future crisis by setting up emergency response plans.
+\\ \\
+Capt. Knickerbocker started out his comments by holding up a plastic bag containing a dirty computer mouse pad.
+\\ \\
+Capt. Knickerbocker said the mousepad had been pulled out of the wreckage of the World Trade Center by a fire chief he had met. After a a hard day of working in the debris, Capt. Knickerbocker said the fire chief walked slowly past him with his head down.

+"As he walked past he shoved this bag in my chest and said one word: 'remember,'" Capt. Knickerbocker said.

+After the service, firemen, police and emergency workers led a procession through the city that traveled past the Oak Hill Cemetery firemen's memorial statue that was illuminated for the occasion.

+====New Member Joins Batavia Rotary====
+Paul Knickerbocker is the newest member of the Batavia Rotary Club. Knickerbocker is a major with the Salvation Army of Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky and is based at the Batavia Community Center. Knickerbocker is not new to Rotary or its mission of "service above self." He has been a Rotarian for approximately 15 years. He originally became a member because his father was a Rotarian and a past club president in his hometown. Flashing forward several years, Knickerbocker is now a past club president, as well as a Paul Harris Fellow (a club honor of distinction for having donated $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International). He has also served his community as a Kiwanis member.

+The Salvation Army is second nature to Knickerbocker; his father served as an officer for 42 years. Knickerbocker is the tenth in a family of eleven children; only two became Salvation Army officers. His wife, Kathleen, is also a Major and their most important job is parent to two small children: the oldest is a senior in high school and the youngest attends Batavia Middle School.

+"I am who I am because of my parents and their involvement in church," said Knickerbocker.

+He also has a degree in law enforcement and worked as a plain clothes detective for Macys for several years.

+Knickerbocker is the fourth person to be inducted into the Batavia Rotary Club since President Sheila Hinton took office in July, 2015.
+====New Leadership Team Looks To Build Salvation Army Membership In Chillicothe====
+Salvation Army Majors Kathleen and Paul Knickerbocker may be new to Ross County, but starting in a new church has become routine, said Paul Knickerbocker, one half of the new corps officers at the local branch.
+\\ \\
+The Knickerbockers, both Majors in the Salvation Army, have served as corps officers, equivalent to pastors of a church in other protestant denominations, in 11 different communities across Upstate New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Missouri.
+\\ \\
+The Knickerbockers have served the Salvation Army for 35 years and been married for 37, the couple said.
+\\ \\
+Paul was raised in the Salvation Army church. His father was an officer for 42 years, so Paul got used to moving every few years.
+\\ \\
+"I've never stayed in one place for very long my entire life, he said. "Salvation army officers rarely stay anywhere more than three to five years."
+\\ \\
+The Knickerbockers are brought in as "trouble shooters" said the couple. The local corps has shrunk in size over the past few years, said Paul Knickerbocker, and one of their priorities is to grow the church in size, as membership has been in decline.
+\\ \\
+"It used to be a lot of people and now it's not a whole lot of people," he said. "So we're looking to make connections with people who used to come here and to find people who need a new church home."
+\\ \\
+Paul is also involved in the Chillicothe Rotary Club. He has been a Rotary member for around 18 years.
+\\ \\
+Kathleen participates in Kiwanis, an international service club dedicated to improving the lives of children.
+\\ \\
+In October, the Salvation Army will host the Thunder in the Valley toy drive, to buy toys for underprivileged kids at Christmas time.
+\\ \\
+"As former officers with The Salvation Army in Chillicothe, we have been asked to help with their Christmas effort," wrote Armour of God Ministries pastor Carnith Boring, in the Facebook Event Page. "We are excited to have God's Crusaders, all our brothers and sisters in Christ and fellow bikers working alongside each other to make this season special for the kids."

+Cornith Boring served as corps officers in the Salvation Army as lieutenants before being promoted to Captain and reassigned to Delaware, Ohio in 2014.
